A resource for group and individual exploration based on works of art depicting the Christian story.
Trustees of the Methodist Church Collection of Modern ArtAn excellent inspirational resource; a catalyst to enable us all to look again at familiar events from the Christian story from unusual, unexpected or just different angles; an aid to reflection, meditation, discussion and spiritual growth.
A visit to an art gallery can be quite inspirational or emotional. Whilst some of the depictions may fit in with our views and attitudes, some of them may be challenging, provocative or even disturbing. Creative Spirit brings the art gallery to us, and presents eight works of modern art. These are works from eight artists with different backgrounds, traditions and styles; together with discussion questions, commentary, response ideas, biblical references and prayers. It provides a set of studies on events from the Christian story, as aids to our spiritual development. And you doesnít need to be an art expert to benefit!
Aside from the paintings themselves, the resourceís key strength is its flexibility. It doesnít aim to be prescriptive in how or when the material is used, but offers it as a pool into which individuals, small groups, large groups or even whole congregations can dip, and mix and add to, as desired or as inspiration leads. The studies could, for example, be used, for individual meditation, retreats or quiet days, or selected from for a series for Lent or Advent groups or presentations.
This flexibility means that it isnít a series of studies that can just be picked up and run. Itís essential that whoever is leading spends adequate time, beforehand, studying and preparing the material, and becoming familiar with the technology. Dauntingly, the accompanying leadersí booklet starts with a nine page introduction. This, necessarily, explains the practicalities of how to play the CD and/or DVD. Experimentation is the easiest way over this minor hurdle, using the booklet for reference only when essential. Alternatively find a technical assistant.
As a significant added bonus, the resource also includes most of the other paintings in the Methodist Church Collection of Modern Christian Art. These donít come with commentaries, questions, response ideas, references or prayers, but most of this is easily developed in the format that your own needs require.
This is an excellent inspirational resource; a catalyst to enable us all to look again at familiar events from the Christian story from unusual, unexpected or just different angles; an aid to reflection, meditation, discussion and spiritual growth.
