SONGS OF THE SPIRIT
A Psalm A Day For Lent And Easter
Megan DaffernUsing the Psalms daily during Lent and Easter
A Lent book needs to have substance yet be accessible. ‘Songs of the Spirit’ fulfils both those criteria. The ‘Songs’ of the title are the psalms and the book is carefully organised into a theme for a week and then a whole or section of a psalm for each of six days; (the author states that Sundays are always days when we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection). It is an easy book to use, in that all the readings are included in the text, always followed by a clear and thoughtful commentary/meditation and a thought-provoking question. The questioning aspect makes the book equally suitable for individual or group use. One pleasing feature is that Easter week is covered too, giving room for psalms which celebrate a redeemed world, after the more sombre selection for Holy Week. My only quibble is that, although the translation is fresh and easily comprehensible, it can occasionally seem a little stilted.
