A MONTH WITH: ST. FRANCIS
ed Rima Devereaux Four volumes which introduce selections from the fine writings of notable saintsThese small volumes would prove useful as both an introduction to the works of these spiritual writers, and a resource for personal spiritual reflection. Each one begins with a brief introduction to the saint and is divided into 31 days of morning and evening readings from their writings and life. As may be expected, they vary in difficulty and usefulness to the everyday lives of the modern Christian, with St Augustine proving the most challenging to understand, not helped by a frequently clumsy translation. Personally, I found the volumes on Julian of Norwich and St. Teresa to be the most inspiring and useful. The one on St. Francis was less so owing to its concentration on so many stories related to his followers, rather than on Francis’ own spiritual practices. These books will be useful for Lenten reflection. Reviewed by Marie Paterson Related topics: Festivals - Lent & Easter The Christian Life Categories:
