WAKE UP TO ADVENT

The Archbishop of York's Advent Book, 2019

John Sentamu

Daily reflections from Advent Sunday to Christmas Day.

The theme is a journey encouraging us to prepare well to celebrate Christ’s birth: Wake Up, Clean Up, Feed Up and Grow Up. However, naturally this does so much more; it is part of a journey of maturing and developing our faith in all that God has for us. I found the themes to be loosely held, each day encouraging us to reflect on how our own lives might better witness to who Jesus is and be responsive to what he might want to do. Each week starts with Sunday’s collect and a reflection on this and the week’s theme. Daily there is a Bible Reading, Thoughts from the author, a Prayer, and Reflective Questions. Inevitably the more time and focus you give to prayer and reflection, the more benefit you will receive. Some reflections are more individual or for personal challenge; some are extremely practical, others deeply spiritual, and others more outwardly directed about how to serve or support others and the community. The author also shares something of himself; a few well-chosen experiences that illustrate his points, give a delightful personal touch and help to bring the thoughts and reflections into reality and practical application. This book is on one level simple and an easy read; on another plane it provides the opportunity for deep communion with our Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, born in humility to be our Saviour.
